Glossary

Here is a small glossary of terms I use in the story. Some come from the elvish language I made up, some are technical terms which explain some peculiarities of the characters.
Since I'm still writing the story, this glossary is largely incomplete and will probably change a lot. Also, I've listed here some terms and ideas which do not appear in the story yet, but will most likely be incorporated soon.
Terms are in alphabetical order.

Aria - Also called Light Elves. Their powers are based around Light. They can cast all kinds of spells; their specialty is defense and healing. Their kingdom is the Arialtha. Their wings are white.

Arialtha - The kingdom of the Light Elves. It's in an alternate dimension to that of the Earth.

Ari'a - Also called Dark Elves. Their powers are based around Darkness. They're thought to be evil, but actually most of them aren't. Their specialty are offensive spells; they can also cast defensive and healing spells, but the latter sap their energies and make them risk death. Their kingdom is the Ari'altha. Their wings are black. When they awaken, their eyes turn black, and since their awakening is abrupt and not gradual like the Aria, their memories are wiped, and they need the help of an Aria to recover them, even if sometimes they remember fragments of them.

Ari'altha - The kingdom of the Dark Elves. It's in an alternate dimension to that of the Earth.

Awakening - The process through which an Elf gains her powers. It is gradual for the Aria and abrupt for the Ari'a.

Elements - Elements are everywhere in the world. All Elves can talk to them and control them to some extent; Aiathl and A'iathl are the only ones who can control them completely. The 'high' elements are Fire, Water, Air and Earth; the 'lesser' elements, such as wind, rain, etc., originally started as manifestation of one or more of the 'high' elements, then gained independence. Light and Darkness are the exception: though Light is made of all the four 'high' elements combined, and Darkness is the negation of the elements (no other element can exist in darkness), they are not considered 'lesser' elements. They belong to a special class, the 'power' elements, because the power of Light elves and Dark Elves, respectively, is largely based on them.

Elves - Elves could be considered a 'subrace' of humans, since they are born in normal human families and are normal humans until fifteen. Elves are almost all female; when they turn fifteen, they gain magic powers (a process called awakening) and access to an alternate dimension where the Elves' kingdom is. Elves have a much longer lifespan than humans; they live about three hundred years, and stop aging permanently when they're twentyfive. They have large wings which they can use to fly, and are generally stronger than humans. There are two kind of Elves: Light Elves and Dark Elves.

Lathie - Elvish word meaning "daughter".

Lien - Elvish word meaning "sibling" (generally used to mean "sister", as Elves are almost all female).

Male Elf - Called arithr by the Aria and ari'thr by the Ari'a. A male Elf is very rare, and can be considered an anomaly. An arithr does not awaken like a normal Aria; in fact, his powers stay dormant unless they're awakened by another Aria. An ari'thr, on the other hand, awakens normally and gradually, much like an Aria would, and this makes him different than the other Ari'a (who awaken abruptly). A male Elf does not have a tyrr-lien.

Mind core - The mind core is that part of a person's mind which makes them what they are: basically, it contains their personality, and, in the case of Elves, also their powers.

Opposites - Opposites are an Aria and an Ari'a who have the same power level (for example, Aiathl and A'iathl are opposites).

Psychic shock - When an Elf tries to read the mind of another Elf who has an higher power level, she gets a psychic shock. A psychic shock causes deep psychic wounds, and will eventually cause the Elf to die if someone doesn't heal her mind in time.

Sylph - Sylphs are spirits of the trees. They have slightly pointed ears, silver eyes, forest green hair and light green skin. They spend their time taking care of their tree, and they cannot abandon it for long or else the tree will die and the sylph will be cursed with eternal life. The kiss of a cursed sylph is poisonous.

Telepathical link - A telepathical link is a bond between two people. All Elves twins are telepathically linked, and also some human twins are (thought they aren't aware of it). A telepathical link allows the two people that are linked to share memories and thoughts; they always know exactly where the other is, and they can talk to each other telepathically whenever they want.

Tharna - Elvish word meaning "mother".

Twins - Twins have a special bond. Elves twins, in particular, are telepathically linked; it can also happen that human twins are telepathically linked, though it's very rare and they aren't aware of it.

Tyrr-lien - Elvish word, literally translated as "brother of the heart". A tyrr-lien is a normal human who has the same mind core as an Elf (though lacking the powers which the Elf possesses). There is one for each Elf (except male Elves), though most Elves never meet theirs, and even if they do meet him, they usually don't realize what he is. As soon as their minds touch (for example, if the Elf attempts to read the mind of her tyrr-lien), however, a mental bond forms between them, much like the telepathical link twins share.
