Annoyances

Darling Fairyfux Firefox:

I'm only using you in the first place because the website I want to download stuff from has, in its infinite idiocy, decided to stop me browsing it in Opera and I won't touch IE unless I have no other choice.

So, please stop taking decisions for me without asking me. I told you to download the damned file, as opposed to opening it - whatever made you think that I wanted to open it, without even being asked, after it was done downloading? I didn't ask you to do that, and I do not like programs who presume to know what I want. For fuck's sake, even IE knows better than that.

No love,

Me

Firefox *always* gives me the choice - I'm not sure what version *you* are using! :)

1.0, fresh install, no options changed. I clicked on a link, was presented with a dialog asking me whether I wanted to save the file to disk or open it. I picked "save".

All well and good up to that point, Firefox obediently saved the file to disk...

Once the download was done, though, the file opened (it was an .ogg and it opened in winamp) without asking me whether I wanted it to open or not (I didn't).

So I went to look in the options, under downloads, and discovered the wonderful box under "file types" - which allows users to pick actions to automatically perform with various filetypes. "Open .ogg files in winamp" was there. I hadn't added it, and didn't want it to be there. Rather annoying. -_-

Are you sure it wasn't Winamp being a git?

Positive. When I deleted all entries from that pref in Firefox, it stopped happening. And there wasn't just audio stuff, but also an entry for pdf files (and indeed when I tried downloading a pdf file, once it finished downloading, it opened immediately), .mov .avi and a few other common extensions.

I find it hard to believe all those different programs don't play nice with Firefox. Especially since that doesn't happen with IE or Opera.
